AVID
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in our schools impacts both students in the AVID Elective class and all students in each building. The AVID elective is offered as an elective course that, like any other class, meets regularly. In the class, students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic support from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that expose them to post-graduation college and career possibilities. In addition, we support and inspire AVID students to become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.
AVID beyond the elective classes supports the entire school by providing professional learning in classroom activities, teaching practices, and academic behaviors that can be incorporated into any classroom to improve engagement and success for all students. Teachers can take what they've learned back to any classroom to help all students, not just those in AVID, to become more college- and career-ready.
All current middle and high school students (grades 6 -12) are welcome to apply for enrollment in the AVID elective course. For more information about the student profile and application process, students should contact the AVID Site Coordinator at their building, or you are welcome to contact Doug Cronk, WPCSD AVID District Director.
