English as a New Language (ENL)

In White Plains Public Schools, English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades K-12 receive ENL instruction in each of our schools by certified, experienced ENL teachers.

In each of our elementary schools, collaborative model classrooms allow for the classroom and ENL teachers to co-plan lessons that will be presented to the whole class during a 45-minute segment. For beginning level learners who need double service periods, stand-alone instruction is provided, when ELLs leave the classroom and spend time with ENL teachers who focus on skills such as vocabulary and conceptual development.

The WPCSD ENL Department’s Mission is to

  • Recognize the students’ strengths and rich background knowledge.

  • Be culturally responsive and encourage appreciation of all the aspects of the different cultures we come from and languages we speak.

  • Foster a feeling of belonging, acceptance, and identity.

  • Advocate for the rights of ELLS and their families while advancing language proficiency.

  • Be a resource for our students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Be a welcoming, encouraging learning support.
