• HIGHLANDS NEWS - February 5, 2018



    The WPMS PTA cordially invites all parents to our next at Highlands Middle School for the presentation: Parenting in the Age of Social Media: What You Should Know to Protect Your Child.  Social media is complicated and so is our ability to manage our kid’s experience with it.  The presentation will provide basic rules to follow and a list of action items parents can take to protect their kids.  Hope to see you all on Feb. 28th Wednesday (originally Feb. 7th, postponed due to the weather) at 7PM at Highlands, Room 261.


    Talent Show:  The talent show rehearsal dates for this week are tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 6th and Thursday, Feb. 8th.  If you have a conflict with the dates, be sure to speak with Mrs. Davila or Ms. Melendez.


    Musical Stage Crew:  If you are interested in applying for “Stage Crew” for the musical “Hairspray Jr.”, please pick up an application from Ms. Hart in Room 201.


    Digital Art Club:  Session 2 for 7th Grade will meet tomorrow, Tuesday Feb. 6th after school in Room 11. If you signed up, please attend this meeting.


    Student Organization:  S.O. will meet tomorrow, Tuesday February 6 in Room 261.


    Programming Club:  Trip to Microsoft Office - On Wednesday Feb. 7th, Programming Club students will meet in the Cafeteria at the end of 1st periods with only their coats and bag lunch.  Binders and school materials should be placed in your locker.  Club will meet in Room 206 when we return.


    Courier:  The Courier will meet on Wednesday February 7 in Room 8; all are welcome!


    Girl Talk:  will meet Wednesday February 14 for both 7th and 8th Grade Girls.


    Multicultural Cooking and Craft Club: The Multicultural Cooking and Craft Club will meet Wednesday Feb. 14th.


    Youth 2 Youth Club Schedule:  meets once a month in Room 160 on the following dates: Monday, February 12th Monday, March 12th Monday, April 16th Monday, May 14th.


    Golf:  Any 7th & 8th Grade Boy or Girl interested in playing Golf this spring for the High School Team, please see Coach Armogida for details.  He will take your name, phone # and any information and the Golf Coach will contact directly.


    Washington DC Trip for 8th Grade Students:  We have about 10 seats left for the trip to Washington, D.C. in May.  We have secured tickets to the Holocaust Memorial Museum as well as the National Museum of African American History & Culture!  Registration is open until all seats are filled!  All registration documents can be found on the school website, outside the Main Office, Room 316 (Mrs. Holder) or Room 116 (Mrs. Spiconardi).

    All materials must be completed in pen and submitted together with check or money order ONLY--NO CASH!  If you require medicine outside of school hours, your pediatrician must complete the blue medical form.  This includes OTC medicines for allergies.

    For those already registered, the second payment of $110 was due Thursday, February 1.  If you have applied for a scholarship, do not make the 2nd payment until you are notified.

    Homework Center:  it runs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Teachers are available to provide academic help for a variety of subject areas.  Students are required to sign up for Homework Center during their lunch periods in the cafeteria.  There are a limited number of seats available and it is first come, first served.

    Favorite Teacher Contest:  Each year, Barnes and Noble sponsors the “My Favorite Teacher “.  Last year, 3 of our own middle school teachers were honored.  Please share with your student and help them show how much they appreciate their favorite teacher.  Enter today! 

    Barnes & Noble is pleased to announce the 2018 My Favorite Teacher Contest!  The winning teacher from each store will be entered into the regional contest and each regional winner will receive a $500 gift card - and the chance to be named Barnes & Noble's National Teacher of the Year.  The Barnes & Noble National Teacher of the Year will receive $5,000 and be recognized at a special event at a Barnes & Noble store.  The winning teacher's school will also receive $5,000 as well.  This is a terrific way to develop your writing skills and showcase your creativity.  Entry forms are available in the Main Office and they are due before Friday, March 2nd.  For more information (para mas detalles), click here.


    Swish Hoops Basketball Camp:  Coach Adams is holding her annual basketball camp during the winter break, Feb. 20-23 at Highlands.  This is a great place to be whether a seasoned or beginner player-the kids have fun, learn a lot and is a great alternative to sitting home on the couch!  Click here for all the details.

    Explore Your Opportunities Conference - April 14, 2018

    The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Westchester branch is sponsoring its Fifteenth Annual “Explore Your Opportunities – The Sky’s The Limit!” conference on Saturday, April 14, 2018 to be held at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale (Bronx, NY).  This program is an opportunity for 7th grade girls to experience the excitement of STEM activities and increase their awareness of STEM careers.  Breakfast and lunch are provided!  For detailed information about the event, please click here.
