Twenty-two White Plains High School students recently represented the district with pride and professionalism during the New York State Education Department’s My Sister’s Keeper Spring STEM Day at SUNY Old Westbury.

The full-day event brought together about 650 young women and girls from across the state to explore opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The students participated in workshops, panel discussions and activities designed to introduce them to college life, leadership opportunities and careers in STEM-related fields.

Participants also had the opportunity to hear directly from SUNY Old Westbury students about their academic journeys and experiences navigating college life.

The event marked the second annual My Sister’s Keeper STEM Day since the initiative was launched in 2025.

“My Sister’s Keeper reflects our commitment to ensuring that young women of color have access to the opportunities and support they need to thrive in STEM,” Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young Jr. said in a statement released by NYSED. “Events like today’s are part of that mission — bringing learning to life, connecting students with mentors, and providing real-world experiences that affirm students’ potential and expand their vision for what is possible.

"When we invest in curiosity and leadership, we can strengthen not only the future of these young women and girls, but the future of our communities and our state," Mr. Young added.

According to WPHS House Administrator Monique Adams, the White Plains students made a strong impression throughout the day.

“Our students conducted themselves in such a mature and professional manner,” Ms. Adams said. “They made us very proud!”

The experience provided the scholars with valuable exposure to higher education opportunities and helped reinforce the district’s ongoing commitment to empowering young women through leadership, academic enrichment and career exploration.
