Hard work and years of dedication have paid off for two remarkable seniors at White Plains High School: Nathan Beck and Eliana Lieber, who were named Wednesday morning as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

For Nathan, the recognition as top senior in a graduating class of over 500 students is both meaningful and humbling.

“It’s a big honor,” he said after being presented a certificate by Principal Emerly Martinez. “I’m just happy that my work paid off. I’ve always wanted to get good grades, and I guess this speaks to that.”

Nathan plans to attend Dartmouth College in the fall and is considering studying something in the social sciences.

During his time at WPHS, he has been active in the Youth and Government Club, where students write and present mock legislation at the state level. He also has interned with State Assemblywoman Amy Paulin and worked on several political campaigns.

A lifelong White Plains student, Nathan attended Ridgeway Elementary School before moving on to Eastview and Highlands middle schools.
“I wouldn’t change anything,” he said of his time in the district. “I’ve been happy with all the resources available here and the other students.”

Eliana, who earned the honor of salutatorian, said the moment reflects years of dedication.

“It’s very meaningful to know that I’ve been working hard for four years,” she said. “It feels very nice to see that reflected.”

Eliana, who also received a certificate as a National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist, hopes to study mechanical engineering in college and is currently waiting to hear back from several universities later this spring.

Her academic journey in White Plains began at Post Road Elementary School, where she participated in the district’s dual-language program before attending Eastview and Highlands middle schools.

“It’s been really amazing,” Eliana said of her experience in the district. “The support systems that have existed — I was able to do specialized learning very early on. Having additional resources and things to do has been a common theme throughout my experience.”

She also praised the teachers and counselors who supported her along the way.

On hand for the occasion was her counselor, Jennifer Ayub, as well as Nathan’s counselor, Michelle Bason.

“They’ve been amazing,” she said about her teachers and other staff members. “They’ve been there for me, and I’ve been able to reach out and learn from them.”

Mr. Martinez said recognizing the school’s top two students is always a proud moment for the community.

“Every year, it’s an opportunity to recognize the hard work of two young people in our school,” he said. “When you look at Nathan and you hear about his experiences outside of academics, and the same thing with Eliana, it speaks to who we are as a school.”

He noted that White Plains emphasizes not only strong academics, but well-rounded experiences that prepare students for the future.

“This is really a big deal,” Mr. Martinez said. “They should definitely be proud of their hard work.”

As the Class of 2026 prepares for graduation, Nathan’s and Eliana’s achievements stand as an inspiration, as well as proof that dedication, curiosity and the support of a strong school community can open doors to endless possibilities.

Congratulations to both! #WPProud
