Ridgeway chess team captures first-place trophy; student meets grandmaster

Three boys hold chess trophy

Young chess players from Ridgeway School made all the right moves at a recent tournament in Bronxville Middle School, bringing home the 1st Place Team Trophy in the Reserve Section at an NSCF chess tournament.

Felix Trepp (3rd grade), John Buyuktosunoglu (4th grade) and Logan Rutberg (5th grade) combined their strong performances and strategic play to earn the top team honor against talented competitors from across the region.

John also recently had a memorable opportunity to meet chess superstar Hikaru Nakamura during the GRADE Metros NYC tournament held May 9–10 at the New York Marriott Marquis. Ranked No. 2 in the world in classical chess, Mr. Nakamura is a five-time U.S. chess champion and one of the most influential figures in modern chess.

The experience was especially meaningful because Mr. Nakamura is also a fellow Ridgeway alumnus, making the encounter an inspiring moment for John as he continues developing his own passion for chess.
