Jumping for joy and inclusion: Post Road students raise awareness for Down syndrome

Post Road School students participated in a daylong Jump Rope event Thursday to send a powerful message of inclusion in honor of World Down Syndrome Day.

Throughout the day, each grade level took turns in the gym, where students grabbed jump ropes and got moving — not for competition, but for a good cause.

“Today’s event is about raising awareness for Down syndrome,” said physical education teacher Brian Golden. “They’re just basically jumping rope. Just having fun, just having a good time.”

The event brought together students from across the school. Fourth- and second-graders kicked off the morning, followed by third grade, while first grade, kindergarten and fifth grade were set to participate later in the day.

Mr. Golden said the activity was designed to combine physical fitness with an important message.

“Just to show off our exercise and have a good time with this event for World Down Syndrome Day,” he said.

The day is observed annually on March 21 (3/21), symbolizing the triplication of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome.

Recognized by the United Nations since 2012, the day promotes awareness, inclusion and the understanding that people with Down syndrome are “more alike than different.”

This year’s theme, “Together Against Loneliness,” highlights the importance of connection, friendship and belonging — values clearly on display as Post Road students cheered each other on with every jump.

The day’s energy extended beyond the gym.

Fourth-graders also stepped back in time during a Colonial Day experience tied to their social studies curriculum. The students rotated through hands-on activities such as Whirl-a-Gig, tin smithing, weaving and traditional games, bringing history to life in an engaging and interactive way.
