Girls on the Run participants at Post Road School spent the spring building confidence, strengthening friendships and developing healthy habits through a program that combines physical activity with social and emotional learning.

The school recently completed its eighth season of Girls on the Run, a national program designed to help girls in grades 3-5 develop important life skills while training for a celebratory 5K run, according to Sonia Gonzalez, Learning Facilitator at Post Road and one of the program's volunteer coaches.

This year's team included 15 students who met twice a week for 10 weeks after school.

"We start with a lesson that focuses on social/emotional development, self-esteem, conflict resolution, etc., and then we go out to run," Ms. Gonzalez said.

The season culminates with a celebratory 5K event, giving participants an opportunity to put their training into action while celebrating the progress they have made throughout the program.

The success of the national program is made possible by a team of dedicated volunteers. Ms. Gonzalez serves as a coach alongside co-coach Erin DiMartino, Post Road's library media specialist. Art teacher Linnea Engles also supports the program as a substitute coach.

A newly released video captures the energy and enthusiasm of the season, highlighting the many activities, lessons and running sessions that helped students grow both on and off the course.
