Fourth- and fifth-graders at Church Street Elementary School fine-tuned their acts during a spirited rehearsal Monday ahead of Tuesday night’s talent show.

From piano and violin performances to singing, Irish step dancing, sign language and even stand-up comedy, the lineup reflects both the wide range of student talents and the rich diversity of the school community. In all, about 22 acts — featuring roughly 25 to 30 students — will take the spotlight when the show begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school auditorium.

Candice Turner, president of the White Plains Middle School PTA unit, has helped run the show for several years and said the focus is on building confidence in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

“We just want to encourage kids to get up and be in front of everybody and just do their best,” Ms. Turner said. “If they mess up a song, we just start it over. We don’t worry about it. It’s a very chill feel, and we’re just so proud of these kids for being brave enough to stand up in front of their parents.”

Students have been preparing their two-minute acts for months, rehearsing and refining their performances for what promises to be an entertaining evening. Along the way, the show has become a close-knit celebration of courage and creativity.

“We always have amazing performances,” Ms. Turner added. “It really showcases the diversity of our community.”
