Fifth-grade members of the Student Council at Church Street School helped make a difference in their community by organizing the school’s participation in the annual Souper Bowl of Caring food drive.

Under the guidance of teacher Melanie Bradish, the students discussed the importance of supporting their local community and decided to encourage classmates and families to donate soup and other canned goods to help those in need.

The students took an active role in planning and promoting the effort. They spent lunch and recess periods creating a flyer on Canva to share with the school community and made daily announcements reminding families to bring in donations. They also decorated collection boxes for each grade level and helped ensure the donations were sorted properly.

As the cans came in, the students tallied the contributions from each grade, repacked the items and prepared them for delivery to Feeding Westchester, which received a total of 386 cans of soup from the school. The organization later highlighted the donation in a segment on News12.

Ms. Bradish said the students were proud of their work and the impact they were able to make through the project, which emphasized the importance of giving back and supporting neighbors in need.
