WPCSD Athletics Update - September 26

The White Plains Tigers are in the heart of their fall season, with multiple students receiving player of the week nominations! Kingston Boykin, senior football player, was named a Week 3 nominee for USA Football’s Heart of a Giant award, presented by ⁦the New York Giants and the Hospital for Special Surgery (https://tinyurl.com/3nu6ux89). Junior forward Alexis Tighe was nominated for LoHud’s field hockey Player of the Week (https://tinyurl.com/4t9b8tff). Boys cross country also took home first place in the Suffern High School Invitational. Congratulations to all our student-athletes!

Kingston Boykin also has immense pride in his academics and responded to USA Football that the Heart of a Giant characteristic which best describes him is the classroom because “I am passionate about education and learning.” 

Standout Team Performances

Girls Varsity Field Hockey  

Won 5-0 on September 18 against Somers, 4-2 on September 20 against Nyack, and 4-0 on September 25 against North Rockland. 

Girls Soccer

Earned a league win at Ossining on September 19, 1-0. They also won 4-0 against New Rochelle on September 25.

Varsity Football

Won 21-6 at Mount Vernon and plays at Roy C. Ketcham at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 26.

Summer Academy

Over the summer, 107 students registered for the Athletics Summer Academy. Students worked through three components, four days a week, for five weeks. 

  1. Strength Training/Injury Prevention
  2. Speed training
  3. Academic (SAT/ACT/Study Skills/Nutrition/Physiology)
    1. Students tested sports drinks for electrical conductivity in an electrolyte lesson
    2. Students used a spirometer, height and chest circumference to compare measured and calculated viral lung capacity 
    3.  Students conducted a personal trainer case study activity. Designed diet and exercise programs for different types of clients. 
    4. Students built and tested the force and distance traveled on devices to help with a bicep injury
    5. Dissected a chicken wing to examine and manipulate muscles and tendons. This gives students a closer look at the inner workings of the body, and how injuries happen and can be prevented. 
    6. Worked on testing strategies and practice for SAT/ACT. 
    7. Students learned time management and study skills. Aimed towards student athletes to give them strategies to cope with a busy and long daily schedule.
