Summer Horizons ENL Program preparing students for the new school year in its fifth year

Summer learning is in full swing at Eastview Middle School, as rising sixth- and seventh-grade students started the Summer Horizons English as a New Language (ENL) Program, which is in its fifth year, this week!

Students are taking classes in English and Spanish language arts, art and STEM. They also have social-emotional learning sessions with Bilingual School Counselor Jessica Rivera, where they learn about mindfulness, breathing exercises and other strategies employed in dialectical behavior therapy.

The goal of the Summer Horizons Program is to ensure that ENL students entering Eastview in sixth grade or Highlands in seventh grade feel comfortable and prepared for their new school on the first day in September. Seventh-grade students also have the opportunity to mentor the younger students after spending a year at Eastview and knowing the building and staff. Today, students in STEM class built catapults to learn about kinetic energy and potential energy, learning about the scientific concepts through hands-on methods. Students in ELA has “Fun Friday,” where they played different word and card games to learn about teamwork and collaboration, while also learning about vocabulary.
