Preparing Our Schools for Success: George Washington Elementary School gets summer upgrades

George Washington Elementary School was teeming with workers Wednesday as they conducted extensive renovations – replacing ceiling tiles in classrooms, installing air conditioning in the gym and upgrading the cafeteria serving area.

Principal Laura Mungin provided a behind-the-scenes tour of the school and described the many improvements the K-5 students will encounter when they return in the fall.

“This summer at GW, we have quite a few projects taking place,” she said. “We have five classes that are having their ceilings replaced. That is going to not only aesthetically improve the space for each of those classroom communities, but also going to ensure a more safe environment.”

Ms. Mungin was also excited about the new air conditioning in the gym that will keep the youngsters cool during warm weather. Two contractors pointed out sections in the ceiling that will accommodate the units high above the floor.

Meanwhile, a worker was busy placing floor tiles in the cafeteria serving area, which will be modernized and made more efficient.

“That is going to not only aesthetically improve the space but also provide more convenient access to our kitchen staff so that they’re able to serve during the six lunch periods that we have,” added the principal, who noted that 600 meals are dished out daily.

The work also includes a new storage area for the kitchen manager, she said.

Ms. Mungin said she was confident all the work will be completed before the school opens Sept. 4.

Similar renovations are being carried out in other district schools, some of which also are getting work done on the outside grounds, including its fields and parking areas.

The district partnered with architects from H2M and Triton Construction managers to develop the Long-Range Facilities Master Plan after voters in 2022 approved the expenditure of $71.4 million for the Phase 1 work at the elementary schools, White Plains High School and Rochambeau Alternative High School.
