George Washington Elementary School 'seniors' learn about expectations

George Washington Elementary School fifth-graders were reminded of Tiger Pride and their roles as “seniors” during a meeting Tuesday with Assistant Principal Joseph Onativia, who spelled out what is expected of them in 2025-2026.
Mr. Onativia stood smiling before the "big" Tigers on campus in the auditorium and reminded them that their example would set the tone for the academic year.
“We have to make sure we have a positive and safe new year,” he said, warmly. “And that begins with how we take care of ourselves and each other.”
To guide them, he asked the students to recognize their emotions and how they are feeling. Four colors flashed on a chart shown on a screen behind him: Green for happy; blue for tired, sad or bored; yellow for frustrated; and red for angry.
Hands shot up as he asked the students which zone they were in. Most indicated green, eager for the year to begin -- but Mr. Onativia nodded thoughtfully and reminded them, “Not everyone feels the same. And that’s OK.”
Mr. Onativia urged the group to speak with their teachers or other trusted adults if they needed any help. He then led them in a chant, voices echoing against the walls: “I am strong! I am kind! I am ready for a wonderful school year!”
Next, he laid out the expectations that would guide them: the four elements of GW Tiger Pride — Be ready, Be safe, Be respectful and Make good choices. Then, one by one, he introduced the five core values spelled out in PRIDE:
- Positivity
- Respect
- Inclusivity
- Determination
- Excellence
“These values,” he said, “are what make George Washington Elementary not just a school, but a family.”
As the students left the assembly, they carried with them both the excitement of being the oldest in the building and the responsibility of setting an example for the others.
More grade-wide community meetings were planned, but the foundation had been set: strength, kindness and Tiger Pride.
