Board of Education student trustees recognized for year of leadership and service

Charis Choi and Afrozah Hossain were recognized Monday evening for their dedicated service as White Plains Board of Education ex-officio student trustees.

During their last board meeting before graduation, District Superintendent Dr. Joseph Ricca thanked both students for their contributions and praised the impact they had on the community.

“Congratulations, Miss Hossain and congratulations Miss Choi," Dr. Ricca said. "Both amazing board members. Thank you for all of your service, all of your efforts, your amazing reports every month."

He noted amid applause that their service will be permanently recognized in the Michele Schoenfeld Assembly Room.

Dr. Ricca also announced the new ex-officio student trustees – Layla Hanbali, class of 2027, and Giulia Amussen, class of 2028.

As an ex-officio student trustee, Charis served as a voice for White Plains High School students while helping strengthen communication between students and district leadership. She has been active in the Science Research Program, Youth & Government, GEMS Club and UNICEF Club. 

Following graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in public health and continue her involvement in community service and leadership initiatives.
Afrozah also brought a strong record of leadership and academic achievement to the Board. 

She participated in the Science Research Program, where she studied Alzheimer's disease, and was a member of the first all-female team in the school's IncubatorEDU program. She serves as president of the Muslim Student Association and is the senior student representative for the Civic Seal of Readiness.

The recognition celebrated the students' commitment to representing their peers and contributing to district discussions throughout their tenure on the school board.
