From obstacle course races and board games to firefighting and police demonstrations to trivia contests, Eastview Middle School students spent Friday  building memories and strengthening friendships during the school’s lively Tiger Fest celebration. Held twice each year, the community-building event transformed the campus into a festival atmosphere filled with athletic challenges, team activities and interactive games designed to bring students and staff together outside the classroom.

Hundreds of White Plains High School students mapped out their futures Friday during the annual AVID College & Career Fair, a bustling showcase of college dreams, career ambitions and real-world life skills. From presentations on universities, nursing and pediatrics to investing, housing and political science, students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program spent months researching their topics before presenting them to classmates and visiting middle school students.

Holocaust survivor Sami Steigmann shared memories of a childhood shaped by unimaginable cruelty during a moving assembly Wednesday at Highlands Middle School, where he brought to life a lifetime dedicated to teaching others about resilience, humanity and the dangers of hatred. Through both sorrowful recollections and messages of hope, Mr. Steigmann guided students through his extraordinary journey from surviving a Nazi labor camp in Transnistria during the Holocaust to rebuilding his life across several countries before ultimately settling in New York City.

Director of Nursing Services Maggie Racioppo has penned a poignant essay, “The Nursing Cape,” an account of a vintage nurse’s cape with local roots and the remarkable woman who once wore it. In it, Ms. Racioppo captures the enduring spirit of the profession, one defined not only by clinical expertise, but by humanity, resilience and a lifelong commitment to others.

It's National Nurses Week! Ask most people what a school nurse does, they will likely say the medical providers hand out ice packs, check temperatures and bandage wounds. But the nurses in the White Plains City School District are quick to point out that this diagnosis is way off the mark. In reality, the role is less “Band-Aid station” and more frontline medical provider, public health official, counselor, educator and emergency responder all rolled into one, often operating alone in a building with hundreds of students and staff.

White Plains High School senior Julia Vieira turned her passion for creating American Sign Language content on TikTok into a standout moment in her college journey. Julia, who is not deaf, received a glowing acceptance letter from the University of Rochester in the upstate New York city, which is known for its large and vibrant deaf community because of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

WHITE PLAINS DISTRICT-WIDE SAFETY PLAN

According to new NYSED guidelines, the 2026-2027 Proposed District-wide Safety Plan has been posted for a 30 day comment period. The public may comment on the Plan between April 30, 2026 and May 30, 2026. Comments may be directed to wpsafetyplan@wpcsd.us.
