    Monday 12/18/17: No School! Happy New Year!

     

    Tuesday 1/2/18: 

    • What we are doing:  Discussing a set of thematic statements that will help us preview our new historical fiction unit. In this unit, we will be reading Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson and examining how the main character, Matilda, changes and transforms throughout the book.

    Monday 12/18/17: 

    • What we are doing:  Discussing what backstory is and identifying some questions that we have about Miss Effie's backstory. We also used #CUB to read and mark the text of the guidelines for our backstory project.

    Tuesday 12/19/17: 

    • What we are doing:  We worked on our Backstory project about Miss Effie! Our task is to create one "artifact" that answers a question about Miss Effie's backstory. We also are writing a thoughtful and thorough explanation of what we created and why we created it. We will share our products, and theories about Miss Effie, on Thursday.

    Monday 12/11/17: 

    • What we are doing:  Discussing "The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers" using an Inner and Outer Circle Discussion format. The students in the inner circle today are having a face to face conversation while the students in the outer circle are having a virtual conversation using Today's Meet. We will switch circles tomorrow! 
    • Student Work due:
      • Complete the discussion reflection questions on page 11
      • QUIZ about "The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers" THURSDAY

     

    Tuesday 12/12/17: 

    • What we are doing:  Discussing "The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers" using an Inner and Outer Circle Discussion format. The students in the inner circle today are having a face to face conversation while the students in the outer circle are having a virtual conversation using Today's Meet. We switched roles from yesterday.

      • Complete the discussion reflection questions on page 11

    • What we are doing: We are visiting the Book Fair today! While we wait to shop, we are taking some time to enjoy reading our IRBs.

    • What we are doing: Using STEAL to help us analyze who Miss Effie really is! We worked in groups to use the STEAL strategy to take a closer look at who Miss Effie really is underneath the surface. This work will help us prepare to create her backstory next week :-)

    • What we are doing:  Starting our work with our third, and final, short story of Unit 2, "The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers". We started to read the story for the first time today by listening to a read aloud of the text and marking the text with #CUBA? We also reacted to what we read and created questions about what we read.

    Wednesday 12/6/17: Early Release Day!

    • What we are doing: Defining some new and unknown words from "The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers." We worked in a group to analyze the use and meaning of one word and shared our findings with the class. Then, we repeated this process individually as we analyzed three more words that we did not know during our first reading.

      • Complete #s 8, 9, and 10 on your Word Work chart
      • Read your IRB for twenty minutes

     

    Thursday 12/7/17

    • What we are doing: We shared the questions that we created about "The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers" today in small groups. As we shared, we sorted our questions to make sure that they were in the appropriate level. We chose one Level 2 or Level 3 question to answer in a short response.

    Friday 12/8/17

    • What we are doing: Indpendently reading "The Cat and the Coffee Drinkers" a second time to prepare for our upcoming discussion about the story on Monday and Tuesday. While we read, we added more annotations to our text and took Cornell Notes about the lessons that Miss Effie taught, the purpose of these lessons, and what the students learned.

    • What we are doing:  Drafting the opening statement of our extended response about symbolism in "The White Circle" and "El Diablo de la Cienega". We are also continuing our work drafting the body paragraphs (2 total) in our extended response using the RACES strategy. If our drafts our completed, we are beginning to use a revision checklist to revise our work. 
    • Student Work due:
      • Complete the opening statement of your extended response
      • Complete the drafts of both body paragraph 1 and 2 due by tomorrow! 

     

    Tuesday 11/28/17: 

    • What we are doing:  Drafting the closing statement of our extended response about symbolism in "The White Circle" and "El Diablo de la Cienega". We are also continuing our work drafting the body paragraphs (2 total) in our extended response using the RACES strategy. If our drafts our completed, we are beginning to use a revision checklist to revise our work. 
    • Student Work due:
      • Complete the closing statement of your extended response

    • What we are doing: Deconstructing the prompt for our extended response about the use of symbolism in both "The White Circle" and "El Diablo de la Cienega". We will also identify our thesis statement and use a graphic organizer to identify the symbols we would like to discuss and claims that we would like to make in our extended response.

    • What we are doing: Using our planning organizer to write the drafts of the body paragraphs (2 total) in our extended response. We will use the RACES strategy to help us construct our body paragraphs.
