Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. May is beginning his second year as the Orchestra Director and Guitar Teacher at White Plains High School. Previously, Mr. May held two orchestra teaching positions in the Chicago, IL area, first at Vernon Hills and Libertyville high schools in the north suburbs and later at Lyons Township High School in southwest Chicagoland. During these tenures, Mr. May led students in performances of several pieces from the professional Symphonic repertoire, participated in two European performance tours as a director, conducted the Libertyville HS Symphony in performance at Chicago's Symphony Center, arranged several jazz, rock, and Motown pieces for extracurricular string ensembles, founded a Lyons Township HS fiddle club, and conducted the Elmhurst College Philharmonic Orchestra in a joint concert with the Lyons Township Symphony Orchestra.
Previously, Mr. May received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While in college, he performed in the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra and two string quartets as a cellist, and several University jazz combos as a bassist. He also spent one semester as the assistant principal cellist in Sweden's Royal Academic Symphony Orchestra while on an exchange program in Uppsala, Sweden. Following this exchange, he was invited to present at the American String Teachers' Association National Conference in California on the topic of Swedish fiddle music in the classroom.
Mr. May has performed music from a wide variety of genres and instruments outside of his classical cello background. These have included old-time and bluegrass fiddle, banjo and mandolin playing, scandinavian fiddling, jazz and afro-cuban bass, rock guitar and drum set, and singing in many styles. Most recently, Mr. May worked as the guitar, mandolin, and banjo player for the summer 2013 premier of "South Pass!" the musical at the Jackson Hole Performing Arts Center in Jackson, WY.
