  • College Essay help is on its way!

Posted by Douglas Cronk on 6/3/2015 3:00:00 PM

White Plains High School staff has developed a plan to make sure that all of our students both complete a college essay in a timely fashion and have an opportunity to get feedback for revising their writing.  In order to roll out our plan to students, the high school conducted an assembly for all current eleventh grade students during period 3 today (Wednesday, June 3).  Please be sure to ask your student about the assembly and to review the materials we distribute; our students are always most successful when we work together to support them.  We will post a recording of the assembly, as well as materials and information on the English department's page, the guidance department's page, and the high school’s web page.  We know that this is an especially busy time of year, so thank you in advance for your support in this important endeavor.

  • English 10 students to take the Common Core English Exam

Posted by Douglas Cronk on 5/11/2014 10:00:00 PM

    Dear Student and Parent/Guardian,

We hope that you are having a successful school year.  As White Plains, along with the other schools in New York State, makes the transition to the Common Core Learning Standards, we have an important opportunity this year.  We may give both the current Comprehensive Exam in English and the new Common Core English Regents Exam.

While our current eleventh grade students will take the Comprehensive Exam in English, the exam for which they have been preparing, we will have our tenth grade students take the new Common Core Regents Exam on Tuesday, June 3, 2014.  This will give them an opportunity to experience the new standards to which they will be held, as well as provide the English department and high school with valuable information about how our students are progressing in response to these new expectations.  Their performance on the test, as well as their feedback, will be used as we continue to revise our curricula to best meet the needs of all our students.

The primary purpose of this administration is diagnostic.  As such, this will not count as their final exam grade.  However, students who pass the exam will have met their NY state graduation requirement.  They will also have the opportunity to improve their grade when they take the test as their final exam in eleventh grade.

As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.  Thank you for your support.

  • Student-Poets Perform @ WPHS

Posted by Douglas Cronk on 11/26/2013 3:00:00 PM

Congratulations to our students for participating in a wonderful open-mic session at lunch today.  The line of student-poets hoping to read their work wrapped around the library!  Whether it was one of a series of “Where I’m From” poems or a very funny ode to the Common App, the students all did a great job.  Of course, the event could not have been so successful without the teachers who arranged it and encouraged their students to participate; thanks to Dennis Polanco, Miranda DeMella, Lorraine Isaac, Nicole Reis, and Cheryl Rosenka!

This year, WPHS students will once again be participating in the English Speaking Union's National Shakespeare Competition.  In the past, the high school has had students make the regional finals (held in New York City).  The event, which is being co-sponsored by the English department and the school's theatre club, Theatre Unlimited, is tentatively scheduled for early February.  Be sure to listen to the announcements, check the school's web site, and keep your eyes open for flyers for more details about WPHS's local competition.  Also, see the resources below for more information.
