This course is designed to prepare the pro-active, highly self-motivated student for the intense rigors of college/university level Italian courses. Its aim is to develop and refine the students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills within a cultural frame of reference reflective of the richness of Italian language and culture. Italian 5 A.P. prepares students to competently demonstrate an advanced level of Italian language proficiency and a relatively profound recognition of the target language’s culture across the three communicative modes (interpersonal, interpretive and presentational) and throughout the five goal areas outlined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and communities). A variety of instructional materials and realia, included but not limited to modern literary works (in excerpts), print journalism, music, movies, television and the Internet, will be employed in additional to the course textbook. This course also fosters perceptive and critical thought and well-expressed analysis in Italian. Prior to the formal inauguration of the course in September, prescribed summer reading and written linguistic exercise is required of all applicants.
