SELECTION PROCESS FOR TRIPS ABROAD
1) To be considered for participation in a trip abroad students must:
a) be a student or a former student*/** in the spoken language of the country to be visited.
b) be in academic good standing in all current courses at the time that selections are made (academic good standing is defined as having an average of C or better).
c) have received clearance from all current teachers.
2 Should a trip be oversubscribed, the following selection procedures will be used for all students who meet the initial selection criteria outlined above:
a) Seniors and juniors who have not participated in any other school sponsored trip abroad (includes The Experiment in International Living) and who have more than a three year sequence in the language will receive first priority.
b) Sophomores (where applicable) who have not participated in any other school sponsored trip will receive third priority. Sophomores with a longer sequence in the language are considered first.
c) Seniors who have participated in one prior school sponsored trip abroad will be selected next.
d) Juniors who have participated in one prior school sponsored trip abroad will be selected next.
e) Sophomores who have participated in one prior school sponsored trip abroad will be selected next.
f) Any student who has participated in two or more school sponsored trips abroad will have their names placed in a lottery and any open slots will be filled according to the order of the lottery selections.
Note: If at any point in this process, there are more students then open slots, a lottery of all students in that classification (example: juniors who have attended one prior trip abroad) will be held and offered participation in the order in which their name is selected.
Once all openings are filled, students’ names will be placed on a waiting list using the priority classifications and a random lottery drawing to establish ranking on that waiting list.
*Students who have completed all courses in the language studied or who are not able to take the language due to a scheduling conflict will be considered for participation. Participation in the language club is advised.
** A junior or senior who has never participated in a school sponsored trip abroad, and who has completed the terminal level in a language (Advanced Placement), and who starts another language, will be given preference to participate on a trip for the new language studied.
