Author of 'A Black Girl and Her Braids' visits Post Road Elementary School to read to students

The auditorium at Post Road Elementary School rocked with a chorus of students saying positive affirmations about their hair on Friday, as Jaylene Clark Owens visited to read her children’s book “A Black Girl and Her Braids.” Ms. Clark Owens visited the school as a part of their Black History Month celebrations.

At The Orange, White Plains High School students squeeze 'All The Juice That's Fit to Print'

At White Plains High School, the student journalists at The Orange know how to squeeze every drop from a story -- with a playful wink to The New York Times. The outlet carries the playful motto “All the Juice That’s Fit to Print” -- a nod to The Gray Lady’s famous 1897 slogan, “All the News That’s Fit to Print” – though it has not yet made the jump to the redesigned website.

George Washington Students present experiments and research at STEM Fair

George Washington Elementary School students put their hypotheses to the test, and they presented their findings at the annual STEM Fair on Thursday. Students presented their experiments and research to their classmates during the day, and the final projects were shown after school to parents and judges, including White Plains staff and community partners.

WPHS senior Olivia Tuzel publishes groundbreaking study on sustainable menstrual products

When White Plains High School senior Olivia Tuzel first began thinking about the environmental impact of feminine hygiene products, it was little more than a lingering idea from middle school, where she wondered why something so essential generated so much waste. Today, that idea has evolved into a peer-reviewed scientific publication, a special issue of the MDPI journal Eng.

WPHS students, Kellen Doherty and Genesis Garcia, prepare for competition at State Championships

The White Plains City School District wishes the best of luck to two White Plains High School athletes who are competing in the NYSPHSAA Championships next week! Kellen Doherty, a ninth-grade student, will compete in the Skiing State Championships on Monday, February 23 and Tuesday, February 24 at Bristol Mountain. Genesis Garcia, an 11th grader, will compete in the Girls Wrestling Championships on Thursday, February 26 in Albany. Congratulations on reaching this point, and good luck Kellen and Genesis! #WPProud🐯

MAS students force Principal Challenge by blowing past 100,000-minute reading goal

Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School students exceeded their schoolwide Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) goal of 100,000 reading minutes by more than double, so Principal Rob Janowitz and Assistant Principal Brendan McCarthy completed this year's student-submitted Principal Challenge. The challenge? Mr. Janowitz and Mr. McCarthy had to dance to “Big Guy,” by Ice Spice while dressed as SpongeBob and Patrick in front of the entire school at an assembly last Friday.

George Washington Elementary School hosts annual jump-roping fundraiser

George Washington Elementary School students were jumping for joy on Friday, as parents came to the school to watch their children jump rope during the PTA’s George Washington Cares fundraiser. There were over 600 jumpers who participated in the event, which raised $4,000 to support the George Washington Food Pantry.

WPHS freshmen present projects on STEM leaders for Black History Month social studies project

White Plains High School’s Media Center was lined with student research Friday, as freshmen presented their multimedia projects on significant figures in STEM for their Black History Month social studies research assignments. Students researched influential Black people who have contributed to advancements in STEM, while also having freedom to present their research in a paper, poster board or podcast.

Post Road Elementary School celebrates Kindness Week and creates Kindness Video

Empathy was at the forefront at Post Road Elementary School last week, as they celebrated Kindness Week! Kindness Week started two weeks ago with a food drive to support the Post Road Market, the school’s food pantry. After being invited to make donations to the food pantry, students learned the importance of empathy and felt empowered to make an impact in their school community by giving to those in need.

Charles 'Chuck' Stogel, President of WPHS Athletics Hall of Fame, to be Inducted into NYC Hoops Hall of Fame

Charles “Chuck” Stogel, a veteran sportswriter and editor, and longtime president of the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association, has been chosen for induction into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame. 

The induction ceremonies for the NYC Hoops Hall Class of 2025, which includes seven other distinguished individuals plus one professional and one college basketball team, is scheduled for Tuesday evening, Feb. 24, 2026, at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel in Manhattan (hoopshallny.org).

Genesis Garcia wins Section 1 Girls Wrestling Championship

Genesis Garcia, an eleventh-grade student at White Plains High School, competed in the Section 1 Girls Wrestling Championships over the weekend and won her weight class! Congratulations to the new Section 1 Champion! Genesis will represent WPHS and compete for the state championship at the NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Championships on Thursday, February 26, in Albany.

White Plains High School seniors meet with counselors to prepare for Senior Internship Tiger Experience program

White Plains High School seniors are building up their resumes through the Senior Internship Tiger Experience (SITE) program. Students met with school counselors and SITE co-advisors Genevieve Little and Jeffrey Hirsch this morning to discuss preparation for their internship experiences and what to expect in the next few months.

Two WPHS freshmen compete in Section 1 Ski Championships, Kellen Doherty qualifies for State Championships

After a strong regular season, Freshmen Kellen Doherty and Wyatt Gonzales both earned the opportunity to represent the White Plains Ski Team at the Section 1 Ski Championships, held Tuesday at Hunter Mountain. Both athletes had an outstanding day of competition among a very strong field.

George Washington School students turn to 'Three Little Pigs' for artwork inspiration

Students at George Washington Elementary School built a paper tower structure using two pieces of paper and tape as their resources. They read about the "Three Little Pigs" in Arts & Letters for Module 2 ARC E. For lesson 27 prologue, the teachers had them experience building a structure similar to the "Three Little Pigs" story. The goal was to use the word "strong" and build a structure that was not only strong, but also standing.
