The Common Core Learning Standards

The Common Core Learning Standards for mathematics (CCLS) are the standards adopted by New York State based on the nationally proposed Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in January 2011.  The expectation is that schools will implementi these standards in the 2012-13 school year.  The state assessments will be based on the CCLS beginning in the Spring of 2013.

The planning for these new standards has already begun!

At the elementary level, a committee consisting of teachers, specialists and administrators has been formed to explore the Common Core Learning Standards.  The objectives of the committee are as follows:
    • Explore the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) in mathematics as adopted by New York State
    • Begin writing the K – 5 curriculum maps in light of the common core standards.
    •  Explore updates to Investigations as well as other resources and determine which primary resource best meets our needs in light of the CCLS and current student achievement in elementary mathematics.
    • Make recommendations about the transition to the CCLS in elementary math with respect to resources, implementation and curriculum
At the secondary level, teachers will use department and PLC time to explore the CCLS, begin writing curriculum maps and evaluate needs relating to current resources.

Assessments will be administered by NYS for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.  Beginning in 2014-15 PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) will begin administering the assessments.
