I.  Use Pencil or black pen and four pieces of white paper for your drawings.

l. Create a drawing of two objects that show motion: car, fan, person, ball, bus, airplane, water running, animal running, bird flying, etc. 

2. Draw four things that open and close.

 

II. Art History: Use the internet or library to research your answers. 

  1. Select one Ancient Civilization in Art History. Research the Civilization and write three paragraphs about it. Include information about architecture, art and developments that shaped this civilization.

      b. Draw two objects of art by the ancient civilization of your choice.

l. Roman -Much of Roman Art was buried and destroyed in Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other settlements by the horrendous* eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79CE. Many sculptures, bronze, stone, and marble, and buildings were eventually discovered.

2. Pre-Columbian refers to the centuries before 1492 when Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas with the first colonists. Some cultures in Mexico and South America were Maya, Moche, Paracas, Huari, and inca who all produced art work.

You can write or type three paragraphs. Draw the two objects from the ancient civilization you selected and add information. What is it? Was it a functional object? Example: vessel, bowl, cup. What was the object made out of? marble?

Why is Art important in the United States of America?


As a nation, we are close to reaching a collective understanding


that all students benefit from the opportunity to learn about and 

experience the arts. Study of the arts in its many forms—whether


as a stand-alone subject or integrated into the school curriculum—


is increasingly accepted as an essential part of achieving success

in school, work and life.


May 2005 Harris Poll on the attitudes of Americans toward


arts education, commissioned by Americans for the Arts, revealed


strong public support.Among the findings:





86% agree an arts education

encourages and assists in

the improvement of a child’s

attitudes toward school.

93% agree the arts are vital

to providing a well-rounded

education for children,

a 2% increase over 2001.

83% believe that arts education

helps teach children to

communicate effectively

with adults and peers.

79% agree incorporating the arts

into education is the first step

in adding back what’s missing

in public education today.


Why do we study Art? Artists show us new ways to see familiar things, and how to interpret new situations and events through various kinds of visual shorthand. This creation of visual language may be the artist's intention, or it may be a side effect of other purposes. Art is timeless and has many uses.  


     Probably the first purpose of art is as a religious ritual. Art can also serve to commemorate an important event.  Art has often served as propaganda or social commentary.   It is common to see art being used to persuade people to some viewpoint, or to make us aware of some human condition. 


   Art has many purposes.  Some can be as simple as recording data visually, conveying intense emotion, capturing beauty of our world, and storytelling,  In any case, art is to interpret the subject matter at hand. Although new subject matter has evolved, the human condition, nature, and events still continue to capture our minds.
