White Plains High School senior Benjamin Van Doren, named the Hudson Valley's only Intel Science finalist, spoke about his honor, the science research program at WPHS, and how he plans to impress the judges when he competes against 39 other finalists from around the country in March.
Ben also tried his best to explain, in layman's terms, his winning research on the migration patterns of birds. In conducting his research, he was assisted by a handful of volunteers from around the New York region who watched the migration pattern of birds in the early morning hours during the fall, and sent their findings to Ben. He worked on his research paper under the guidance of teacher Tim Selg and Cornell University mentor Andrew Farnsworth.
A keyboardist with the WPHS Jazz Band and captain of the track team, Ben will be heading to Cornell University in the fall.
