S.T.A.R.S. was born out of a need to raise the academic standards of students who are in the middle of the academic school chain. It was strongly felt that students who were in “Regents Prep” classes needed to be motivated to take higher level classes in order to prepare them for college and academic success. Students who are currently in Regents level classes also needed to be motivated and encouraged to take Honors and Advanced Placement classes. The main emphasis of the program is to bridge the achievement gap between minority students and non-minority students.
We have over 100 students that participate in S.T.A.R.S, on some level. Many S.T.A.R.S. students received scholarships and were successfully helped in their endeavors for higher education. Last year one of our students received a ten year Gates Millennium Scholarship that will carry her through med school. Another student got into Harvard. We are extremely proud of all of our graduating seniors.
During lunchtime meetings, we had very informative, educational, and motivating discussions. Some of the topics covered were, Stop using the “N-word”, Elevating self-esteem, Preventing and not fueling Fights, Raising your GPA, Preparing for College and Beyond, and Advocating for a Fair Grade. |
