About White Plains Schools

Welcome to the website of the White Plains Public Schools. White Plains is a thriving suburban city of about 50,000 people located approximately 25 miles northeast of New York City.  Our excellent public schools are a strong attraction for young families and for those relocating to the New York metro area.   Our tree-lined neighborhoods retain a small-town feel, yet our town is the economic and political center of Westchester County.

The White Plains Public Schools serve youngsters in PreKindergarten through twelfth grade in campuses spread throughout White Plains.  The school district has:

  • Five elementary schools for kindergarteners through 5th graders, each offering a challenging curriculum.

  • One middle school located on two campuses for 6th through 8th graders, offering many curricular and extracurricular opportunities to prepare students to meet the challenges of the high school.

  • One high school for 9th through 12th graders offering over 400 courses, including more than 25 honors and advanced placement courses. The high school's recent renovation includes state-of-the-art media center and science classrooms on a 72 acre campus that includes tennis courts, a pool, and a fitness center.

  • An alternative program for 7th through 12th graders needing a smaller setting.

  • PreKindergarten program for four-year olds and adult and continuing education classes for thousands of adults.

We're proud that we have...

  • Very favorable class sizes comparable to other high-quality districts in the area.

  • Many specialized programs which improve and enrich our students' lives, accommodate diverse learners, and distinguish our district from others, including programs for gifted and talented students, for learning disabled and special education students, and for children with other special needs.

  • Five-year sequences in French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish are available for student study starting in our middle school.

  • A wide range of performing arts opportunities, including band, orchestra and chorus beginning in fourth grade and theater productions beginning in middle school.

  • State-of-the-art instructional technology program focused on improving student achievement with computer-networked schools that offer one computer for about every three-four students.

  • One of the most generous transportation policies for K-8 students in Westchester County.

Below are just a few of the reasons  why the White Plains Public Schools were rated among the top ten districts in the country for corporate relocation in a survey by Expansion Management magazine.  See Accomplishments for more reasons.

  • Both our Middle School and our High School have been designated Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the New York State Education Department and the U.S. Department of Education. In 1999, Church Street Elementary School was selected as one of the State's fourteen Schools of Excellence.

  • Our computer-networked school district is ranked in the top 3% of districts nationwide in computer access and capacity.

  • White Plains has one of the most generous transportation policies in Westchester County for students in grades K-8.

  • The school district has received over $40 million dollars in competitive government grants and foundation funding in the last nine years alone.

  • A nationally recognized Controlled Parents' Choice Program - a model for school choice.
