Cultural Encounters for Students

Presents

The   Global Run

An International Interdisciplinary Pilot Project

The goals of this project are to empower youth,

connecting knowledge to action, by using resources and technology

to enhance educational experiences in schools worldwide.

Promoting Global Citizenship

Schools make a difference through service learning linked to interdisciplinary studies.

The Global Run Project will take place worldwide in 10 schools that communicate, collaborate, and celebrate using videoconferencing and integrative technologies yearlong.

School Action Plan

After an initial planning session between interested teachers and the support team,  videoconferencing sessions among teachers and students will occur throughout the project phases.

Phase 1- Finding Support FOR A COMMON GOAL

Each school finds a sponsor in the community to match miles for dollars up to $5000.  Suggestions will be provided at a follow-up meeting.  Funds will be used to support the Millenium Development Goals (see fact sheet).  For example, this year’s focus is on education and water.

Phase 2- Taking steps TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL HEALTH & WELL-BEING

Physical Education students wear pedometers in PE and log their steps at $1.00 per mile.  Any other clubs, after-school functions, and walks during lunch, family weekends, and community service can be logged and added to miles within the duration of the project as determined by the participating school.

Phase 3- Counting the Steps FOR NATURAL CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS

  • Math, Science, and Technology: Analyze, inquire, and design to develop solutions; generate and process information using appropriate technology; apply mathematics in real world settings; understand and apply scientific concepts and principles to the physical setting and living environment; understand relationships and common themes; apply knowledge and thinking skills to address real-life problems and make informed decisions
  • English: Read, write, speak, and listen for information, understanding, and cultural awareness; analyze and respond to human development issues; practice effective communication skills through social interaction
  • LOTE - Languages Other Than English: Communicate in various media; develop cross-cultural skills and understandings
  • Social Studies:  Examine world issues through a variety of perspectives; build geographic and economic awareness; participate in the roles and responsibilities of global citizens
  • Health, Family Consumer Science: Establish and maintain personal health and fitness, and a safe and healthy environment; learn about and raise awareness about resource management
  • Arts: Create and utilize resources to participate in various roles in order to use art for understanding diverse cultures and raise awareness of global issues
  • CDOS  - Career Development and Occupational Studies: Gain and apply technical and universal foundation skills to decision-making

Phase 4 – Analyzing Data TO FIND SOLUTIONS

  • Teachers will use data collected in Math to compare and contrast, analyze, evaluate, and make inferences to be posted in school, shared on the website, and compared to other participating schools’ results.

Phase 5- Raising GLOBAL Awareness OF YOUTH WORLDWIDE

  • Collaborating with the support team to fulfill the phases of the project
  • Connecting with organizations and content providers to engage in international classrooms
  • Participating in online projects

Phase 6- Working together to make a difference.

  • Using technology to enhance communication skills and promote cultural awareness
  • Developing collaborative classroom partnerships, giving students the opportunity to work toward common goals
  • Connecting to higher education institutions as a resource and support system through videoconferencing
  • Presenting, print and electronic publishing, documenting to disseminate outcomes

Phase 7- CelebratING Accomplishments OF AWARENESS AND ACTION LEADING TO POSITIVE CHANGE.

Students will have a series of videoconferences as they share their data, presentations, projects, videos during a week of summits at the end of the school year in June.

Schools may share their work, results and collaborative projects on:

Future Goals

  • After this pilot strengthens our project, schools will replicate the project worldwide.
  • Participating schools can expand their student base of participation.
  • Teachers, students, and community can become ambassadors and share our work at conferences in order to make this project replicable.

EVALUATION

Texas A&M Center for Distance Learning Research will help us evaluate the project and future needs.
